3. Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest

Hugh Wilson let gorse grow over damaged farmland, even when his neighbors thought it was a terrible idea. The weed sheltered young native trees, and a forest began to return. Decades of work at New Zealand's Hinewai Nature Reserve fit into this lovely half-hour film.

Happen Films tells the story through Wilson and the place he cares for. It's the pick to start with when you want a conservation story that leaves room for hope.

4. Secrets of the Octopus: Masterminds

Marine biologist Alex Schnell follows octopuses using tools, solving problems and adapting to the animals around them. Paul Rudd narrates. The intelligence of these creatures gives the episode plenty to work with in just over 42 minutes.

8. The Lost Forest

Before Julian Bayliss and his fellow scientists can study a forest in Mozambique, they have to climb a rock wall to reach it. The journey gives this short documentary an immediate sense of purpose: the expedition and the research depend on each other.
